Starting a new job can create a lot of excitement and some anxiety as you onboard, learn and set out to prove your value within the first 30, 60 and 90 days. Here are some helpful tips for hiring managers and new employees. This information will help you navigate your new environment and set you up for success in the early parts of your work tenure.
First 30 Days- Create a Strong Foundation
Review your company benefits in details. Sign-up to take advantage of any special benefits such as RRSP’s, Stock Options and Pension Plans. Also use the time to finalize and submit any additional enrollment forms.
If you are a hiring manager assign a partner to your new hire. This will make your new employee feel supported and give them the space to make a new friend early in their onboarding journey. Research indicates that new employees who are supported by a work partner are 95% more productive in the first 90 days.
Ensure you have access to the right tools and software. That includes computers, work equipment and the correct access to software and working documents.
Spend time with your working team- set up individual meetings with your immediate working teams. Also set time to meet with your stakeholders. This is a crucial step in getting to know more about your team, your work culture and will also help you establish your presence among your new teammates.
First 60 days- Learn & Grow
Explore the company’s mission and seek clarity about your role, your goals and what is expected of you from a performance standpoint.
Spend time learning about your core function. Explore training resources and guides and don’t forget to complete your compliance training.
First 90 days- Expert Proficiency
Congratulations are in order when you make it to the 90 day. You should now have a clear understanding of where you fit in relation to your team dynamic and your work mandates.
Get connected with your extended working teams. Join an employee resource group; it’s a great way to meet other employees who share a common interest. You can use this forum to create new relationships and learn a new craft in a different functional area. Many employee resource groups work on activities like strategic partnerships, fundraising, event planning, and community volunteer.
Create a framework for further learning and growth. Find out what core resources are available that you can use to build on the knowledge gained through the first 30 days. Utilize additional tools to continue to learn about your core role and how it relates and impacts the larger organization.
Your new perspective and insights are valuable. Share key learning and insights with your team and manager. Your observations are great ways to inspire new ways of thinking.
By following these onboarding tactics you will be well on your way to performing well in your new role.
