Whenever I meet with my team, I give them the opportunity to guide the conversation and set the tone of our meeting. - Have a 1-on1 meeting agenda prepared. This is important even if you are having an informal conversation. By having an outline prepared it will keep your conversation on track and allow you to share and discuss the critical items that are top of mind within the time you have allotted.
- If you are having challenges or have a roadblock use the time to ask for support. You may not land on a solution right away, but be prepared to answer some questions, or share some insights that highlights.
- What have you tried so far?
- What were your results?
- Is the goal that you had in mind still realistic?
- How do you plan to pivot your approach?
- Use your 1on1 to discuss what is working well based on your performance and ask for feedback to pinpoint or address opportunities. There is nothing worst than being surprised at the end of the year when it’s time for performance reviews. Having regular performance checks with your manager will help ensure a smooth conversation during performance reviews.
- We all have bad days, so you may feel compelled to use your 1on1 as a ranting session. Talking about your grievances can help you move past the issue you are faced with but do not let the negative overshadow any positive work or approaches you have taken. Don’t get me wrong. It’s great to be authentic and speak your truth, however be mindful of the impression you leave with your manager. Be clear and transparent if you need support and end the conversation on a positive note.
